Parents Give Complete Creative Freedom | Artist's Color Choices

Houston Newborn Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, offers a large variety of props such as colorful textiles, natural organics, vintage-inspired pieces, and stunning accessories to complement your precious baby.

Greetings, friends! Today's blog post is a special one because it shares unique and creative newborn sessions. You see, as a professional baby portrait photographer, my studio is the perfect place to have your little one's first photos taken! I offer many affordable options with completely transparent pricing. Parents encounter no hidden fees or surprises when booking. Everything is a seamless, laid-back experience from the moment you contact me about securing your own appointment.

For instance, a styling questionnaire is given so parents may relay their color preferences to me. This, along with a newborn session prep guide, is given so you're sure to have an amazing session! However, sometimes parents tell me they have no color preferences or specific props in mind. They give me complete creative freedom, which is a huge treat! Having the option to pull anything is truly a wonderful way to be creative and provide some of the best Houston Newborn Photography images! I cannot thank my clients enough for entrusting me to work with your family.

Let's get started on showcasing two recent sessions that made my heart sing!

Joshua | 6 Days New

Joshua is the most handsome little dude! Weighing just over 7 pounds with a head full of gorgeous, dark and curly locks he truly is a gem! His sweet parents told me to choose everything for the session. This in mind, I pulled all things classic yet unique; shades of blue, spring greenery, rustic red, and antique buckets. I even made sure to pull a neutral as this compliments his skin perfectly!

Joshua's session also reflects masculine newborn boy colors such as charcoal grey in the popular potato sack style of newborn wrapping. This is the super cute one where they look like a round little egg, ha! Parents always ask me how I am able to make them round like a basketball and I explain I learned this at a newborn workshop in Houston, TX. I do practice newborn safety with all of my petite clients so if you ever have a question about how a certain look is acheived please know I am an open book an completely transparent in all that I do. :-)

Aria | 5 Days Old

When Aria's parents booked her newborn appointment, they expressed complete trust in my preferences and relayed that they came to me for my professional opinion. Since I do photography newborn cherubs full time, for a living, this is a great idea since I know how colors will look under the lights, especially once we process the images in Photoshop.

For Aria, I pulled inspiration from her gorgeous skin tone! Her features are absolutely stunning: beautiful eyes, long lashes, and sweet cupid lips. She is an absolute beauty!

Aria's posed newborn session is a work of color art! You'll find many stunning tones such as a rich, vibrant purple and lilac lavendar as well as a fun spring time yellow, too! Adorned with custom headbands and tiebacks, she is the epitome of newborn grace and beauty! Her session was an absolute dream and she was such a joy to work with! Mom and Dad did an incredible job preparing her for the newborn session. They even brought grandma along to help, too! It takes a village, and I am so excited to have photographed this beautiful time for her parents.

Dad’s Little Football Player | How to Add a Special Prop from Home

Special request by parents: Lucas' sports inspired newborn boy session. Let's play some ball!

Greetings, friends! A common question I receive from parents is, "Can we bring a prop from home?" No worries! The answer is simple: YES. As a professional newborn photographer in Houston, I have a portrait studio catering to all things newborn and baby. I pride myself on offering a huge array of props and textiles to create lovely sessions. However, I also recognize parents often have a few ideas of their own. I delight in offering timeless and unique styled sessions and will happily incorporate a few of your own items into my session.

For example, when Lucas' sweet mama called to book her newborn collection, she relayed that Dad is a huge sports fan and they would love to showcase a few sports themed baby photography images during our time together. First and foremost: I was completely honored to hear from her because she was kind as can be, but also I knew I had a few great ideas up my sleeve to still maintain my newborn style while also incorporating a prop from the clients' house.

Baby with Football during Posed Session

Little man Lucas visited at just 7 days new. He was a full term baby boy weighing over 8 pounds! So much gorgeous newborn rolls, chunk, and a cherub face that is too handsome! When adding a prop that is not found in my studio space, such as a football or other sport, there are a few spots you may easily add the item, such as the bucket, seen below, or even during the naked bean bag posing.

Timeless and Unique Newborn Set up with football | Styling and Vision

When styling a brand new baby's session, my motto is simple: vintage meets classic for timeless results. I use antique props and rustic floors to create dreamy images. I also like for the sessions to be very masculine for little boys and very dainty for girl babies. To add the football into the session I chose charcoal grey, heather grey, and a metal pail that pops against the barnwood floors and rich colored football. This is a wonderful compromise to be true to my own newborn photos (dreamy, gorgeous, classic images) without having too many distracting props that take away from the beauty of baby boy.

A second place to add the football into the session is during the naked bean bag posing. I love working with little ones during this set up because this showcases all of their adorable newborn features from their tiny fingers, chubby cheeks, long lashes, etc. I posed Lucas in forward-facing pose, seen above, and then added the football underneath him. Mom and Dad were right next to me helping me assist during this time. :-) Remember: baby's safety is of the utmost importance so it's always best to act with caution.

There you have it! Two adorable yet timeless ways to add a special prop from home into your newborn session! Thanks for stopping by, friends! Keep on scrolling if you'd like to read more details about the professional portrait services provided by Sarah Borchgrevink Photography.

Prep Guide for Smash and Splash | Classic one Year Old Portraits

Houston Newborn & Baby Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink, shares tips for preparing for little one's cake smash and bubble bath session.

Cake Smash & Splash Prep Guide for Parents

Greetings! Thank you for choosing me to photograph your little one’s cake smash and splash! I am very excited to have them in the studio, or even on-location, for a gorgeous set of one-year portraits. Cake smash sessions are adorable and are a super fun way to celebrate the monumental milestone of your sweet baby turning one! Here is everything you need to know about our session together. A cake smash and splash are when baby smashes a cake followed by splashing in the tub! If you would like to omit the bubble bath (or prefer the bubble bath to the smash) let me know in advance so we may adjust session design. Most parents book in the studio because this ensures baby is happy and well rested since we do not have to worry about the sunrise/sunset light. My outdoor sessions take place right as the sun is coming up and right as it is going down so if you prefer outdoor lighting remember that nap times may need to be adjusted so baby is well rested for their session.

I provide the following for cake smash and splash:

  • Time & talent designated in your session type (mini, standard, deluxe)

  • A white cake stand or cream antique high chair

  • · Vintage quilt if outdoors

  • · Rustic floor props for baby to sit upon such as a box or bowl

  • · Farmhouse bowl for the bubble bath

  • · Warm water & bubbles

Parents provide the following for cake smash and splash:

  • · A cake of their choice (typically 9”)

  • · Any specific décor or props you would like that are not seen in my studio

  • · Balloons, streamers, cake topper etc. If you are bringing additional décor, let me know in advance so I may set aside more time for set up

  • · Diaper cover for baby during their cake smash or a birthday outfit

  • · Towel to clean baby up + extra outfit

When Do Cake Smashes Take Place?

Cake smashes are best done when the baby is 11 months old and not yet walking. This is also a great time to book your cake smash so you may receive your photos and prints before baby’s birthday party. Many parents like to use the photos for invitations so it’s best to plan wisely. Always give yourself enough planning time. There is a two week turnaround time for photos so keep this in mind when contacting me for your cake smash. I want this to be a great experience for you!

My Baby Portraiture Style

My favorite way to photograph babies is in a simple, classic and timeless scene. I like to avoid too many props because it detracts from baby and is distracting in the images. Feel free to peruse my portfolio in advance so we can make sure we’re a good fit for one another!

Here are sample sessions to view:

Helpful Tips in Preparation for Baby’s Session

  • · Let the cake sit in the car overnight so it is warm and easy for baby to get into

  • · Avoid fondant icing – babies often dislike the texture

  • · HEB makes wonderful 9” white cakes with buttercream icing

  • · If using a colored icing remember this may stain baby’s skin; red velvet cake, for an instance, will also stain the baby’s skin and it will look like the baby is injured in the photos.

  • · Bring a towel and change of clothes for baby

Thanks again for choosing me to photograph your baby! Let me know if you have any questions so I may assist!
