Ideas for Baby's First Photos | Newborn Girl Styling through Dainty Accessories

Sarah shares samples of the setups you can expect when visiting for a posed infant session.

A popular question I receive from parents is, ‘where do you we buy all the props we see in your photos?’ Have no fear: I provide everything for your sessions and do so with thought, creativity, and also ensuring our session is all things classic, timeless, and forever preserves this incredibly special time in your life.

Prop Philosophy | Enhance Through Simplicity

As a professional newborn baby photographer, the branding behind my studio encompasses all things natural, dreamy, and simple. The props you’ll find on hand are often inspired by my love of vintage and antique vibes, but also lets the baby shine and does not detract from your little one. Baby should be the star of the images. Props and accessories add gorgeous touches such as interesting textures, background, and rustic floor items, but simple is always best as to not take away from the beauty of a newborn baby. This approach also ensures your photos are forever timeless. I liken this to the little black dress we, as women, all have in our closet. Classic, forever chic, and never too trendy, as those trends do fade.

Handmade with Love from all over the world

Moreover, each piece you find in my Houston Newborn Baby Portrait Studio is carefully selected to curate an amazing collection for our time together! Many of my favorite vendors are sourced from all over the world such as Poland, Italy, Australia, Canada, and more! While the states has plenty of neat vendors, there is something incredibly special and unique about purchasing handcrafted, small batch props that are custom designed for petite clients. As a photographer, I build relationships and repertoire with my vendors and am so happy to have many options for all of my needs.

For instance, I purchase all of my luxury little sitter props from GeorgeandAnnie, located in Brisbane, Australia. My hand-knitted, darling and precious newborn baby bonnets are from MoonlightLittleKnits, located in Milan, Italy. These beautiful photography props for newborn babes make for the dreamiest of sessions! By using handmade photography props, the quality is excellent and also unique! When it comes to my ninja wrapping newborn skills, however, I love to purchase baby headbands and wraps from ClothApothecary.

However, my absolute favorite vendor for headbands, tiebacks, and dainty, petite accessories for little ladies is Created by Carli, props for little people, located in the UK. Her items are so amazing it’s worth using the pound, ha!, and converting it over to American dollars, ha! Of all the vendors I’ve encountered, her headbands, florals, halos, and tiebacks are the perfect addition to adorn any chubby cherub baby girl.

Delicate, Natural, and Lovely

Ahhh, if you’ve made it this far I am truly excited to show you, through recent newborn baby girl sessions why I provide all styling, such as props, accessories, lighting, etc., because my studio is the perfect place for your little one’s session. Simply bring their diaper bag and leave the rest to me. A newborn styling questionnaire & posed prep guide are always provided for parents, but put your feet up, relax, and leave everything to me. During our time, I’ll ensure Baby is comfortable, safely posed, and you have a little break.

For All the Things My Hands Have Held the Best By Far Is You

See the cutest newborn, family, parent, and sibling images from last week!

Newborn Family Photography in Houston Texas

Of all the photos you’ll ever have taken of your new arrival, the family, parent, or sibling images will resonate timelessly throughout baby’s life. These images reflect the love and bond between a brand new baby and their parents. This is when little one has just began to be part of this world and they truly fit in the palm of your hand. Never will they be this small; smell this way, or touch your heart as sweetly. As one of Houston’s Top Newborn Photographers, I delight in offering packages that reflecting classic and stunning studio portraiture work. Family, parent, and sibling setups are wonderful to document. Here’s who visited last week!

Baby Boy Quinn

newborn family photography.jpg

Congratulations to Jessica and Matt! Quinn is such a handsome little fella; weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces he is truly a bundle of joy. He is their first baby and was an absolute joy to photograph as his session reflected a Woodlands Creatures Theme with furry, sweet animal friends. Mom and Dad booked the popular ‘petite’ newborn package, which is ideal for first time parents. This newborn family pose is one of my favorites as hands are on baby and show how sweet, little, and precious they are. Congrats to the L Family! All my joy to you on this new adventure with your beautiful son!

Sweet Sisters | Amal & Mia

sibling sister newborn posing

The wrapped newborn mini with family add on (an additional $150) is the perfect session for babies who have missed the traditional 14 days or less for scheduling. Amal visited my Houston Baby Portrait Studio at a little over 3 weeks old. Mia, three years old, is the best big sister! Sibling and newborn photography can sometimes be a little spirited, but Mia was a rock star and one of the best big sisters I’ve ever had in studio! For their sibling portion we did two different set ups: one of Amal holding Mia on a white, fluffy flokati rug and another where Mia was in the bucket and she gently kisses and hugs sister.

As you can see, Amal is snugly and posed perfectly in one of the many buckets you’ll find in my studio! Her head full of gorgeous dark hair is adorned with a precious headband. Sibling images will make their mother’s heart soar! What a sweet pair of little girls. I am honored to have worked with them.

The Garcia Family

The Garcia family visited with their brand new little girl, who weighs 9 pounds, such a squish! They chose the full newborn session, which is an amazing option for parents seeking a large variety of images for our time together. Your baby is only small for a few short weeks so sometimes parents will book the largest package to ensure they have as many photos as they could possibly need.

Working with new parents and their earth side babies is an absolute dream! When posing Mom and newborn baby, or dad and their little one, we we use two different backdrops: one is the custom wood wall that is a complete show stopper! The other is the classic white background in my studio featuring gorgeous light that is effortlessly beautiful. Both make for an incredible gallery!

The Wolf Family | Returning Clients

About two years ago I had the honor of visiting their beautiful home for an in home lifestyle newborn session; at the time I was still offering family sessions in my clients’ homes. However, I have since moved to where I specialize in posed newborn photography within a studio setting; this in mind, the Wolf family came to me this time for their images of their second little one, Abby! Big Brother Benjamin is even more precious than the last time I saw him! He was all smiles and full of pride as we photographed the entire family with little sister. Many thanks to the Wolf’s for choosing me a second time. I loved working with you again!

Father and Newborn Son | Favorite Angle

Colt is the a miracle baby (see more of their post here with Love Story of Ashley and Justin). During our full newborn session, Baby Boy is posed in many different setups such as Dad and Baby. I love this angle because it shows all of Baby’s beautiful features as well as the chest of Dad protecting his little one. Colt is also a baby plan client so I worked with Ashley & Justin on their maternity session, newborn session, too, and will also be seeing them for their 6 month sitter and 12 month cake smash and splash session. Thank you to the R family for choosing me!

7 Tips to Rock the Baby in a Bucket Pose: Last Week in Studio

Houston Newborn Photographer, Sarah Borchgrevink Photography, offers stunning portraiture for brand new babies & their family. See tips for posing babies in the ever so popular parent requeted set up: the bucket.

Favorite pose of parents

When booking a newborn session, parents are sent a styling questionnaire in which they're able to share their favorite props, colors, and also must have poses. It never fails: every parent requests a bucket shot because what is more precious than a newly earth side little one perfectly tucked into an adorable bucket?

As a professional baby portrait studio, I truly love working with my most petite & darling clients, particularly when it comes to a floor prop set up, such as an antique bucket. I have a huge array of props on hand, all of which are available to you. They're all vintage-inspired, often purchased from local antique shops.

When posing a baby in these rustic pails, parents often ask, "How do you achieve this look?" Have no fear! I am happy to share some tips on this so you, as a potential client, can be informed on how I safely pose little ones.

Moreover, this blog posts also showcases babies who visited in the last week so you can see variety in how I style my dreamy, timeless and stunning newborn sessions.

posing babies in a bucket

7 Tips for the bucket set up:

  1. Baby must be in a deep sleep for these images. I keep my heat on 77 degrees so baby is nice and warm, but also mold-able and peacefully slumbers so we have serene, gorgeous galleries! Part of being one of the Best Houston Newborn Photographers is providing parents with amazing galleries. The foundation of an amazing floor prop set up must always be a warm room so we have a sleepy, sweet baby.

  2. Place weights in the bottom of the bucket. This keeps it from toppling over and helps baby stay in place.

  3. Don't pose baby naked in the bucket. You see, we want to create the "illusion" that baby is naked, however, if their legs are out, this could be a danger to baby's well being because newborn babies are much stronger than they appear! They could push forward with their legs, thus launching baby out. This would be a disaster so in order to avoid this, keep baby's legs wrapped and their arms out.

  4. Select a bucket, pail or another floor prop that coincides with baby's size. I know, I know: all buckets are the same, right? Actually: this is not true! I have different buckets for different sized babies. 5-pound babies, to elaborate further, will need a different bucket than a 10-pound baby. The baby should fill most of the prop and you should not be stuffing tons of items in the bucket. To ensure we have the perfect prop for your precious, sweet little baby, I send a questionnaire once little one has arrived so you may share details such as their weight.

  5. Make sure baby is fully supported. You do so by using posing beans.

  6. Pose baby's arms before placing them in the bucket. You do not want to be picking the baby up and moving them around whilst in the bucket. The placing of the baby should be seamless: pose their arms, while the baby is in your lap, and then move them into the bucket. This keeps their head supported and you're not jolting their ever so fragile limbs.

  7. Get those elbows hooked. Essentially, this means that you have to hook their elbows over the rim of the bucket so baby does not slip downward. This is why it's ever so important to place weights (such as 20 pounds) inside of the bucket so it will not be top heavy.
